CHARACTER
Name: Korra
Canon: The Legend of Korra
Gender: Woman
Age: 18
Wing Color: Extremely light blue; almost white.
Canon Point: Right after Book Three: Episode Five (The Metal Clan)
Canon Point Explanation: I felt this was a good point to take her from at as even though there is the threat of the Earth Queen lingering, Korra does not yet know about the other threats building up in the season. And, despite an argument it was generally a more peaceful (and safe) point to take her from as opposed to the most recent episode where she and her friends are in danger, which would have resulted in Korra being even more frantic about and obsessed with getting back home.
History: Her Legend of Korra Wiki page.
Personality: One of the first things that people might notice about Korra is that she's very energetic and enthusiastic (provided of course that it is not during the morning which is "evil.") She's quick to crack a joke or provide a sarcastic response and is known to cheer and jump around when excited and happy. In all, she's a pretty upbeat person and while she might not be as good at "looking on the bright side" of things as other people she certainly tries. Since she was young she's known that she is the Avatar and is tasked with trying to keep peace and balance in her world, and she's thrown herself into whatever she thought was needed for the "job" whether that be training or moving to a completely new city. By her own admission it's a position that she's always wanted to have and even when she struggles with it she keeps a certain determination to fulfill her duty and help people.
"Helping people" is generally her biggest motivation, in fact. She wants so badly to do right by the people of the world, even having to be reminded by her mentor that the daily problems of every citizen were not only up to her to fix. Despite the fact that keeping peace and balance is the duty Korra was born into it's also clear that she cares personally about the people outside of that as well, and even when she's lost her connecting with the spirit that she felt made her the Avatar in the first place she's still determined to help save Republic City from Unalaq. She's kind and almost always willing to help anyone from a dragonbird spirit to a kidnapped group of airbenders, and of course this extends from the people of the world to her friends and family as well. Extremely loyal, Korra would do almost anything to help them… including threaten other people.
Korra is, put bluntly, confrontational. She's direct and generally has no problem telling people what she wants and needs to get done. Her preferred method of dealing with everything is to face it head-on and hope she can overpower it, and thankfully she's got a stubbornness streak a mile long to back it up. Described as being "tough as nails" she's always wanted to be an independent and capable person and for the most part achieves it. She tries to stick by what she believes no matter the consequences, such as leaving open the spirit world portal and helping captive air benders escape despite it being considered an act of war. And while there are actions and thoughts that she doesn't regret she's also been wrong about a lot of things, such as misjudging Asami as a spoiled brat (mainly because of jealousy) for a while after they met despite the fact that she'd been nothing but kind to her. Korra can definitely hold a grudge when she wants to, although thankfully not as long as some people.
Of course, while being assertive and independent CAN be good things Korra's also got a bit of a temper. Easy to anger and stubborn are not a good combination either as she's known to getting right up into people's faces in an argument, refusing to back down. She's emotional and prone to acting on those emotions, even in situations where that will help absolutely nothing. Especially in situations where it will cause even more harm. Oftentimes she'll say not only nonsensical and hurtful things, such as when she told Tenzin that the Avatar must not NEED airbending anymore, since she couldn't do it. Other times she just has really awful comebacks but said with enough feeling that they can still be annoying. She's impulsive and doesn't always think about the consequences of her actions beyond what she wants at that moment and believing force is the best way to get it. In the past she's shown no problem using her power to try and get people to do what she wants such as the time she threatened to feed a judge to her polarbeardog or when she physically tried to drag a new airbender with her to join the others in rebuilding the Air Nation. Even in some situations where she doesn't always resort to force it's clear that she wants to, believing it's the easiest and sometimes only way to get her point across.
From what the show has shown and implied, most of the past Avatars travelled the world meeting new people and learning about the different cultures and bending that way. Korra on the other hand was raised in a guarded compound away from her tribe and even her own parents. Sheltered and isolated, she was in for a shock when she moved to Republic City. She'd never put a thought to the idea of homeless people in the city and carelessly mentions how she's always had people taking care of her to Mako and Bolin who were orphaned at a young age. She's unused to dealing with people about certain things but has no problem asking for advice in certain situations to help that… however it doesn't always actually help, as she has a habit of screwing up some social interactions no matter what she tries.
Another thing she's unused to is the anxiety that surrounds her position. Despite having known that she is the Avatar for a long time, when she moved to Republic City it was the first time she really had to realize what that meant beyond being able to bend all four elements. The fear and anxiety of not being able to do her job and of losing the only thing she thought made her important (her bending) piled up and she became extremely withdrawn as she didn't know how to deal with it or admit it. Opening up about it helped, but it's clear that she still struggles a lot with worrying about being a good enough Avatar for the world. Throughout the show she's always seen wondering if she's done the right thing, or how to best help people without letting anyone down. Losing contact with her past lives made her feel like she'd failed, and failure is at this point her worst fear. Even after regaining her connection with Raava and starting the Avatar Cycle anew she's plauged with worries about whether she's done the right thing keeping the human and spirit world connected despite people telling her that they trust her or believe that it is. No matter how many things she's able to accomplish so far she's still always worried she's going to mess it all up somehow, and the confidence she normally shows can fall away pretty quickly.
Finally, she's really trying to help better herself. Although she's never been the strongest spiritually she is trying to make an effort to understand and help the spirits more now that they can also enter the human world, despite declaring that she will no longer be the bridge between the two worlds. She's trying to learn and practice the less physical side of being the Avatar such as "conflict resolution" and even giving some advice of her own. While she still struggles with it it's clear she's at least trying her best to improve and become not just an Avatar but also a person that she can be proud of.
Strengths
Physical: Korra has been training her whole life, and is in great shape. She's muscular and athletic which is shown not only in fighting scenes, but also almost as an afterthought (such as when she picks up three children and a full grown man at the same time.) Mostly she depends her bending abilities, which in her world are the abilities to control the elements. In fact as the Avatar she can control all four of them.
Waterbending is the ability to control water, although the water cannot be created and has to be present. This is her native element and the first one she mastered, and she is also able to heal people to a certain degree with it. Earthbending is the ability to move and control the earth, which is to say rock and soil earth. This is her least used element. Firebending on the other hand is generally her go to bending ability and it, of course, is the ability to create and control fire. Finally, she can also airbend- control the air such as creating gusts of wind and using it not only to attack but help jump and other things. This is the most recent element she's learned and she had a particularly hard time with it, being unable to even create the tiniest gust of wind her whole life until very recently. Even though she's still learning she was able to teach another airbender the very basics and uses it very often.
Also as the Avatar she has access to something called the Avatar State. In the show it has been described as being able to tap into all of an Avatar's past lives to use their power and knowledge as a sort of power boost. It was created when the first Avatar, Wan, originally merged with the light spirit Raava, and even though Korra has lost the connection to her past lives when they separated she is still able to access it after they rejoin.
In the show Korra has also shown the ability to "energybend-" bend not only the elements but the energy inside of people. She's used this to give people their bending back after it was taken away, and also to project a huge energy form of herself to fight Unalaq and Vaatu. However this is an ability that she will not be taking with her to Luceti as it's rare enough in the show as it is and not something that makes sense with the power cap.
Mental: Although not as intelligent as some of the people she knows Korra does have a quick wit in some situations (such as fighting.) Although she's not good at planning ahead of time she does have a knack for coming up with things on the spot as she seems to thrive while in the middle of action. She's also shown to be an effective leader when she puts her mind to it, and although it was difficult at first her public speaking has vastly improved. She's not the most inspiring person to be sure, but it's a work in progress.
Emotional: Korra wears her emotions on her sleeve most of the time, which can of course be a strength or a weakness. Being emotional isn't always a bad thing though- it can be good to show people that you care about them! Listening to her heart and emotions might not always work out at the time but it's a path that she tries to follow, and although she might pick the selfish road sometimes overall her goal is to help other people. Her bravery and loyalty to not only her friends but the people of her world is definitely her greatest strength.
Weaknesses
Physical: Korra relies a lot on her bending abilities and even though she'd be capable enough in a fight without she she would vastly prefer having them to not. There's also the fact that her fighting style itself is very direct- she tries to just push her way through and overcome people with pure power. Korra's bending lacks the grace and elegance that a lot of other characters have shown on the show (she first performs airbending, something characterized by spiral movements and allowing problems to work themselves out, with… punches and kicks). She's less the "dodge and evade" type and more the "fight fire with fire" type. When people realize this it can absolutely be used against her because no matter how powerful she is if she just keeps barreling in that can be taken advantage of. There's also the fact that everything is less strong here in Luceti, something she'll absolutely not be used to (or appreciate).
Mental: She's far from the type to make a plan ahead of time and follow through with it, and often prefers to just jump right into danger and trouble without as much thought as she should probably put into it. There are also just a lot of things she doesn't know- she was raised in an isolated compound until she was 17 after all, with supervision even when taking Naga for a walk/run. Even with everything she's learned she's also got a decent bit of self-doubt and worries a lot that she isn't doing a good enough job as the Avatar and it's really only just starting to sink in that even if she wasn't the Avatar she would still be able to help people. Even after defeating Unalaq and Vaatu she still worries that maybe she's done the wrong thing in leaving the spirit portals open, which shows that she's still concerned that she might not be making the right choices or doing the right thing.
Emotional: Sometimes Korra can let her emotions get the better of her. A lot of the time, really. She's pretty easily angered and equally quick to act on that anger, sometimes even with others there to try and calm her down. She's also pretty easily taken advantage of because of her desires to do the right thing and be a good Avatar (something that hasn't gone unnoticed by those working against her). Even when she tries, she's not very good at hiding how she feels and people that know her are pretty quick to pick up on it. The fact that she's so anxious and worried about being able to fulfill her duties and help the world can also be a hindrance, and a few times she's almost completely given up because of feeling like she's failed. Although these are things that's she's tried to work on it's still possibly one of her biggest weaknesses.
Anything else?: Korra will be bringing Naga, a polarbeardog that she tamed when she was a child if that's alright! Big enough to ride on with large, bearlike front paws and a canine head and tail she's been Korra's best friend ever since they were young.
SAMPLES
First Person:
Okay, there's something wrong here. I mean, there are a LOT of things wrong here but I'm talking about one thing specifically.
Has anyone SEEN the animals here?
Like, really</> seen them? They're so weird! I keep thinking "oh look, it's an owlcat-" but there are no wings. And considering how everything else here has wings it seems a little odd that an owlcat wouldn't. It's like- okay, it's like this.
[ And here there is a small, badly scribbled drawing of… a cat. Well it sort of looks like a cat anyway, but Korra's no artist. It's… Just a regular cat. Somehow, a very alarming regular cat. ]
See? And that's not the only one either. A lot of them seem pretty strange, and that was BEFORE they started talking.
I guess I should get right to the point here: are these spirits? Someone mentioned that there are spirits here too but I haven't seen any… are these wingless owlcats the spirits? They don't seem very spirity but I maybe I'm wrong. Anyone got any better ideas?
Third Person:
"Alright, Korra. You can do this." Korra nodded, taking a step froward and then another until she was running and moving her arms, creating a gust of wind and jumping-
-and falling almost immediately as her tiny little wings fail to catch the breeze.
"Ugh!" She raised a fist then dropped it back to the ground before reluctantly getting back to her feet. As if being dragged to some place she'd never even heard of and given new limbs wasn't bad enough, she couldn't even use the wings for anything. She'd hoped she could glide on them if she combined it with airbending but so far it had been a total bust and the only thing she'd gotten out of it was strange looks from passerby.
It would have worked if she still had a glider. It would have worked if she was still back home where there were gliders and things made sense. Well more sense than here, anyway. She'd been restless ever since she showed up and the more she realized she wasn't getting home the more restless she got. All she wanted to do was feel like she was accomplishing something, like she was doing something even while she was stuck here.
Even if that was something as silly as learning to glide with these things on her back.
Well, she was hardly one to give up but this was starting to seem like a lost cause. There had to be something better she could spend her time and energy on, anyway. Other people had been here so long and they still found things to do to stay productive- why couldn't she? She'd seen stores and a school and all sorts of things, and not only could that keep her busy it could maybe even help give her ideas on how to get back home, anyway. A pang of guilt greeted those thoughts- she knew it wasn't her fault but just abandoning everyone like that… Well, it would be fine. She'd figure it out. It was just going to take a little time was all.
"And it looks like that's all I've got," Annoyed, she brushed herself off and headed off down the street.
